SW small Logo In Country there are different kinds of singers and styles. In this series we will revisit some of the best pure singers we've had in my over 40 years behind the morning show country music microphone.  This is PART 3 of this series. There is no order, and the omission of one of your favorites today does not mean they are not "as good"  as someone else.  They may be in the next installment.  We are not taking career stats into account either, these are simply incredible singers that would sound good singing anything, anywhere, any time.  In each installment I will have a mix of men, women and eras.  Also in many cases I include my full profile I've written on them.

ICYMI  - The Vocalists: Supreme  (Part 1)   (Part 2)

They Are   -  The Vocalists: Supreme  (Part 3)

Trisha Yearwood  (My Full Profile on Trisha Yearwood)

When you hear Trisha Yearwood sing, you think that you're listening to someone that really knows that they're doing, and you do.  She had great country commercial success for a good long while. But her real success is in the fact that she is universally recognized as one of the best vocalists of any kind, by about everyone over the past 30 years.  When she sings a simple song, to the National Anthem, to one of her big country hits, you listen.  I have always felt she is like the country "Linda Ronstadt."  Give her a song, give her a format, and put her in any venue and she can sing it and sing it well.  Trisha Yearwood would sound great in front of the Cleveland Orchestra, fronting a country band, a big band, or a simple musical quartet or combo singing jazz in a night club.  I would stop and listen to her sing anywhere without question.  Her whole self into the whole song.

I'll Feature This Gem - Showcases Her Incredible Voice (Read the comments)

Randy Travis    (My Full Profile on Randy Travis)

When Travis debuted on country radio in the mid 1980's, fans thought they had died and gone to heaven.  That big, rich, warm voice was just what they had been waiting for. Randy Travis, I will always maintain was the savior of country music when she showed up, but it was more than just his amazing traditional material.  His voice reminded many of some of their favorite "old schooler's,"  but at the very same time he sounded new and fresh attacting tons of new fans for us.  It was an incredible combination that may never be duplicated.  Right place, right voice, right time.  Travis' vocal gift to us was his warmth and sincerity of virtually every song he sang. The song just wasn't sung, it was felt, and as fans we could feel it too.  His voice is honest and straight forward and incredibly his own, as there is no mistaking that you are hearing Randy Travis, and country music.  Whatever official reason their was, people just loved hearing Randy Travis sing a song.

What A Performance!  #1

Martina McBride  (My Full Profile on Martina McBride)

How did that huge voice come from that petite woman?  That was always the question.  MM was great at giving a large singing voice to very poignant and important songs that super served her very loyal fan base.  I talked with many people during her run and many said that she was their favorite singer.  Many times she sang songs that dealt with difficult issues but needed to be sung and more importanty heard.  In short, she was a brave singer who had this incredible voice.  She was the queen of soaring high note holding, and seemingly endless breath.  MM knew who her fans were and sang directly to them.  As time went on the music itself was not as country as at the start for her, but no matter, she is truly amazing singer and vocalist.

Fans Loved This Song  - All The Great Things She Is -

Ronnie Dunn    (My Full Profile on Brooks And Dunn)

Every great duet has that one singer that emerges as the lead voice of the two.  It just kind of happens.  With Sugarland it was Jennifer Nettles.  With Florida Georgia Line, it was Tyler Hubbard.  Even with Hall And Oates, it was Daryl Hall.  I always felt that Brooks And Dunn was patterned after Hall And Oates, as the formula was the same.  Brooks And Dunn became the most successful duo of all time because of great songs and the outstanding vocals of Ronnie Dunn.  His incredible range and absolute distinct sound helped make them the longest running act from the 90's that steamrolled well into the 2000's. They still tour and they still sound great. The song I'll feature here showcases Dunn at his best. Fans loved this song as it came later on. It was very different for them, but here you can feel Dunn's passion and heart.  A great concert song.

Listen to the simply amazing, Ronnie Dunn.

Timber I'm Falling In Love - Patty Loveless  - 1989  (Album - Honky Tonk Angel)

SW small Logo Patty Loveless enjoyed incredible success in the 1990's.  She showed up in 1985 with a lot of fanfare.  She was getting a lot of press and buzz about her more traditional sound.  Much of this was outside of country itself in the mainstream.  But huge success took a while and being honest, I think many of us were afraid that she would wear the "potential" label forever.  But this song which was her tenth single release in her career really put her on the map as it went #1 as it was her first chart topper.  Her music prior was great and I loved it, and was being critically acclaimed but this was a full on hit.  For about the next ten years, Patty was a big time hit maker recording some of the most memorable songs of the 1990's.  She stuck to her country roots, garnered a huge following and was one of the most versatile singers we had, recording fun songs like this and some really deep and powerful ballads.  This song was her springboard to much bigger things.  Patty Loveless, a huge favorite of the 1990's.  Resilient, respected, just a terrific talent.

WYNN - #27 - Why Not Me - The Judds

Why Not Me - The Judds - 1984

SW small Logo I was a very young broadcaster in 1984 and working for WRMZ in Columbus where station was in the old Southern Hotel, downtown.  One day I was riding the "so-called elevator" to the seventh floor, top floor, with Tim from RCA Records, and two young women dressed up like you seldom see, I mean totally decked out.  We small talked on our short, but bumpy ride in a building going through major restoration. (We were all glad it made it to the top).  No one knew these two at all, but a few months later we all knew  - The Judds.  Their first single was a song called, Had A Dream, a quirky kind of song that had very moderate to very average success.  Mama He's Crazy was next and it was a #1.  They were noticed. Then this song hit, and went #1, and really solidified The Judds as a big-time force in country perching them to become incredibly successful and exceedingly influential over the next decade.  There are times that a song can decide if you're gonna hang around or not, and for me, this was that song for The Judds.  It's about perfect, timeless and sounds as good today as it did all those years ago.  I have always felt this song captured who they really were as much as any song they ever recorded.  This is as memorable as my elevator ride with them  -  then the completely unknown future superstars of our format.  Hall of Famers - Well deserved.

WYNN - My Sunday Morning Song!

SW small Logo I love Jake Owen and his music. He's always a good time and this song is his latest fun summer song.  It's a mix, or remix what whatever you want to call it, of new and old as they channel On The Road Again, with On The Boat Again.  This seems to be the new trend in Nashville, or Mashville. Mashing. or mixing songs and some have had great success, ALA Cole Swindell recently with She Had Me At Heads Carolina.  We've done this before, actually Jake has done it before with the John Mellancamp song mix a few years ago. Even Kimberly Perry  has done it with her new song, which is actually her old song.  But Jake is always fun, and so is this new song.  You do have to wonder if more are on the way, especially with 90's country being so big.

WYNN - BROWNS - Well, I Hope So

SW small Logo Browns season is still a couple of months away, but the Browns and many other teams had mini-camps this week. And by all accounts, it was a great success.  Well, I hope so.

I understand there isn't a lot to talk about right now with football as the season is still a ways off.  There really is no off field drama to fuel us this year, and that in itself is rare around here.  Between Baker, Odell, Jarvis, Watson, the NFL office, and the legal system we've always had something to chat about, and none of it had to do with football. This year we can talk about football it seems.

But as cool as that is, I have to admit the talk right now is a bit silly locally, nationally and on social media.  The media seems to be tripping all over itself on how good we look right now.  That in seven on seven drills, we are completing passes and scoring touchdowns on our defense and that we look "really great."   All of this with no pads on, no pressure, no contact, no tackling or blocking, in shorts, 80 degrees, with only helmets on perfect controlled conditions.  Well, I hope so.

I have no doubt whatsoever that the Browns are going to score a good amount of points this year.   But I have other questions and I think it's uneducated not to.  The defense, will it be a whole lot better as it needs to be?  No one has Joe Woods to scapegoat anymore.  Seems like they've addressed some of those problems. But time will tell.  I remember vividly last year during camp I read and heard from more than one Browns reporter that the defense last year was "The best since the Browns have been back in 1999."  Well..OK.  BTW the Browns defense stunk last year well before many of the injuries took place.  It started week one and the numbers say, they were "historically bad".   They are saying this year will be different.  Well, I hope so.

Then there's the coach.  As the Browns roster seems to be getting better and the QB seems to be ready for a far better season, are you as concerned as I am on the head coach?  And are you concerned that the front office really has acquired and signed the right players to solve many issues?  Today, that combo is the weak link by far.  Are we still going to be the worst run organization in the conference?  Are we still going to make the worst in game decisions in the league that cost us games?  Or have we and they finally and long last crossed over and all of that is behind us and it's a new day where things really will be different after all these years?

Well, I hope so....
