Kayo

Do you remember who Olivia Mandala is? Our student photographer! She has been fostering this dog for the summer and she is asking for our help to place her in a home before she returns to school next week! Ugh!!! She’s absolutely adorable.

Our dog of the week …
Hey there, I'm Kayo... get it? Like "knock-out" because of that cute little spot under my eye. I'm just a puppy, a puppy that was found at 6 weeks old under a porch during a thunderstorm. Someone brought me into One of a Kind and I immediately went into foster care because I'm so darn cute. I'm in foster care right now so make sure you call ahead if you would like to meet me. But first, you should know some things about me :)

I'm going to be a medium size dog most likely 40 to 50 pounds. They're not sure what I am since they don't know where I came from but possibly terrier, shar pei, and maybe American Bulldog even. My fur is nice and soft, and as of now I don't shed too much. Since I've been in a home since 6 weeks, I have a bit of a head start on things like potty-training and not mouthing. That doesn't mean I won't be a lot of work though. I know to go potty outside but I still have accidents in the house, though I'm starting to feel guilty when I do. My mouthing (playful, puppy bites) still needs some work. Raising a puppy is like raising a baby. I can only go about 4 hours without being let out (except at night). I need lots of attention- playing, training, short walks now and long walks when I'm old enough. Remember that puppies get big, and if you don't think a behavior will be cute when I'm 30-40 lbs then you shouldn't let me do it as a puppy. My foster mom has worked hard to make training positive with discipline... NOT punishment. I like to go in my cage at night and to take naps because I have never been put in there while my foster is mad at me, and I am crate trained. I have two foster siblings (a 45 lb lab mix and a 25 lb cattle dog mix). They rough house with me and I hold my own pretty well... but sometimes I get too excited! I LOVE people! I've met all different types of people while in foster. I've been around children as well. If you have children, realize that I am still in the mouthing stage and my baby (needle) teeth may hurt them sometimes. However, if people continue my positive reinforcement training in my forever home, I have all the potential in the world to be a wonderful dog :) Puppies are a 24 hour job, and so is training... great, adult dogs do not just happen, it takes time, patience, and lots of fun work from the puppy's parent. My foster mama has one request of my forever home... that they keep in contact with her :D I am a very loved puppy and she wants me to be loved like this and more my whole entire life :)

Another important note about me is that in my short life, I have already had to have ear surgery. I had a hematoma in each ear. Potential adopters should know that I may always have problems with my ears... cleaning them regularly and monitoring them to make sure they don't puff up again will be a necessity.

So remember, if you want to come meet me, call the shelter first and if I'm not there they will arrange a time for you to meet me.
