Meet Vivian ... this is now a very sad situation. Our usual pattern when we report to SCAC is to walk the kennels and determine which dogs are new residents and need a photograph to be posted to the SCAC site. Labels are a valuable tool. Manufacturers use them daily as a requirement to do business. Draping bottles and cans, and even signage, they protect us from ourselves. But, labels can be a bad thing too. When we label something incorrectly, the product is not represented accurately; therefore, is ineffective or harmful in its use. Over time, the reputation of the goods, or services, is diminished and the value is lost from the mistake of mislabeling.
The Pit Bull breed has been grossly mislabeled. In fact, do you remember Petey from the Lil’ Rascals? He was the Golden Retriever of that day and he was a Bull Terrier! Dogs are a product of their environment. If treated cruelly, or praised for harsh behaviors, a canine will use his “pearly whites.” If treated with kindness and shown the love of humanity, they will reward you in the same way.

We are thankful to the passing of Ohio House Bill 14 which no longer allows for the “labeling” of this breed. We wouldn’t want to be labeled, let’s no longer label them. Because of the misconception of the breed, Terriers have a longer length of stay in shelters and are more often euthanized. Pixie is one of 12 Terriers in our care wanting to experience the love of a human companion. As is routine, animal rescue groups will only re-home dogs that are deemed adoptable. This girl, and her 11 friends, meets the criteria! Keep in mind, few animals are perfect … but few humans are too.
If you are interested in adopting please call 330.865.6200. Tax-deductible donations can be made payable to: One of A Kind Pet Rescue. The adoption center is located at 1929 West Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44313. www.oneofakindpets.com
